Announced before he existed, shaped by Allah's own hands, and defended by his Maker against the angels' hardest question. The creation of the first human.
Before you existed, you were announced. Not you personally, but your kind, and the announcement triggered the first recorded objection in history. "And when your Lord said to the angels: Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority, they said: Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we exalt You with praise and declare Your perfection?" (2:30). Read that question honestly: it is the case against humanity, filed by sinless beings, before a single human had drawn breath. And the answer that silenced heaven was not a rebuttal. It was a credential: "Indeed, I know that which you do not know" (2:30). The story of how Adam was created is not just biology from revelation. It is the transcript of a trial in which your species was accused, defended, and honored, and the defense attorney was Allah Himself.
The Qur'an records the construction order in Allah's own words: "Indeed, I am going to create a human being from clay. So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My created soul, then fall down to him in prostration" (38:71-72). Clay first, the humblest material on the site. Then proportioning, a deliberate shaping. Then the breath, the created soul that turned sculpture into servant, and the command that the entire angelic host bow.
And one detail sets Adam apart from everything else ever made. When Iblis refused the prostration, Allah's rebuke named the honor: "O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands?" (38:75). With My hands. The seas were spoken into being; the stars were commanded. Adam was handled. We affirm the words as they came, without asking how, and we notice what they were revealed to do: measure the size of the insult when arrogance looked at that creature and said "no".
One narration explains the palette: Allah took a handful from all the earth, and so the children of Adam arrive as the earth arrives, red and white and black and every shade between, the easy and the grieving, the bad and the good. Every human face is a sample of some soil somewhere. Racism, in this telling, is a man mocking dirt he was also made from.
The angels' question deserved an answer, and it got one, staged as a public examination. "And He taught Adam the names, all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said: Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful" (2:31). The angels conceded; they knew only what they had been taught. "He said: O Adam, inform them of their names. And when he had informed them of their names, He said: Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth?" (2:33).
Sit with what the contest was. Not strength; angels of power stood in the room. Not purity; nothing outpurifies beings who cannot sin. The tiebreaker was the capacity to learn and to name, to receive knowledge about things and carry it. That is the specifically human gift, the one being exercised as your eyes cross this sentence. The angels asked what a bloodshedder could add to a universe already full of praise. The answer, demonstrated rather than argued: a creature who knows, chooses, and still praises, is worth more than one who praises because he cannot do otherwise.
The hadith fills in the texture of the beginning. Adam was created sixty cubits tall, on a Friday, the day the Prophet ﷺ called the best on which the sun rises: on it Adam was created, on it he entered Paradise, on it he was expelled from it. One day carrying the whole arc of the human condition: origin, honor, fall.
And his first assignment was a sentence. Go, said his Lord, and greet that gathering of angels, and listen to how they greet you, for it will be your greeting and the greeting of your descendants. He said: as-salamu alaykum, peace be upon you. They answered, and added: and the mercy of Allah. Fourteen hundred years of Muslims repeating that exchange daily are quoting the first words the first human ever spoke to another created being. Your species' opening line, on the record, was peace.
The same hadith closes with a promise hiding in a detail: everyone who enters Paradise will enter in the form of Adam, the sixty-cubit original, mankind restored to factory specification. History, in between, is the long distance between what we were made as and what we made of ourselves.
So how was Adam created? From clay, by hand, with a breath from his Lord, over an objection his Maker personally overruled. Which means every human being you will ever meet, including the one in your mirror, is the subject of a divine wager that the angels could not see the sense of, and Allah could. Every prayer prayed, every mercy shown, every truth told at cost is a payment on that wager. "I know that which you do not know," He said. You are the evidence still being entered.
