The first thing Allah created was a Pen, told to write all that would ever happen. He taught mankind by the pen too. Destiny and knowledge share one tool.
Of all the things Allah could have created first, He created a Pen. Not a sun, not a throne, not an ocean, but an instrument for writing, and the first thing He commanded it to do was to write down everything that would ever happen until the end of time. That single detail tells you something profound about the kind of universe you live in. It did not begin with a bang or a blaze. It began with a record being written. And later, when Allah first spoke to humanity through revelation, He again reached for the same image, the pen, and honoured it as the tool through which He teaches. Destiny and knowledge, the two things that most shape a human life, both open with a Pen.
The Quran does something with the pen that it does not do with most objects: it swears by it. "Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe" (68:1). When Allah takes an oath by a created thing, He is drawing your attention to its weight, telling you this matters more than you assumed. He swears by the pen and by what is written with it, elevating the humble act of putting marks on a surface to the level of a divine oath.
And in the very first words ever revealed of the Quran, the pen appears again, now as a gift. "Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous, who taught by the pen, taught man that which he knew not" (96:3 to 5). Think about the choice being made there. At the opening of all revelation, when Allah introduces Himself as the Most Generous, the generosity He points to is that He taught man by the pen. The first flattering thing your Lord says about how He deals with you is that He made you able to read and write, to capture knowledge and pass it on. Literacy is framed as one of the great mercies, the tool that lets a single human mind receive what it did not know and hand it to minds not yet born.
Beyond the pen we hold in our hands, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told us about a Pen we will never see, and its story is one of the most staggering in the tradition. He said that the first thing Allah created was the Pen, and that Allah commanded it: Write. It asked, what shall I write? And He said, write the decree of all that will be until the Day of Resurrection (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2155). Before the heavens, before the earth, before a single soul, there was a Pen and a command to write, and it wrote the entire course of existence in one act.
This is what connects the Pen to the Preserved Tablet. The Pen is the instrument, the Tablet is where the writing was kept, and together they mean that the story of creation was authored before creation was made. Everything the earlier article on the Preserved Tablet describes, the leaf that does not fall without being recorded, the life that is not at the mercy of chance, traces back to this first moment: a Pen that wrote it all down at the very beginning.
It is important to be careful here, because this idea is easily misread into fatalism, and honesty about the sources requires resisting that. The Pen writing everything that will be does not mean you are a puppet whose strings were tied before you were born. What the Pen recorded was Allah's perfect knowledge of what would happen, including your own real choices, freely made. A teacher who knows exactly how a student will answer has not forced the answer, and the difference between knowing and forcing is the whole space in which human responsibility lives. The Pen wrote your choices as choices, not as chains. Your striving, your prayers, your repentance are all things the Pen wrote precisely because you would truly reach for them. The record does not cancel the reaching; it includes it.
The Quran uses the imagery of writing one more time, and it opens onto something almost dizzying. "And if whatever trees upon the earth were pens and the sea was ink, replenished thereafter by seven more seas, the words of Allah would not be exhausted. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise" (31:27). Turn every tree on earth into a pen. Turn every sea into ink, then add seven more oceans of ink. Write with all of it, and you would run dry long before the words of Allah, His knowledge and His creative command, were finished. There is no bottom to what He knows and can bring into being. The Pen that wrote your destiny drew from an ink that has no end.
So what is the Pen in Islam? It is two things that rhyme with each other across the seen and the unseen. In the unseen, it is Allah's first creation, told to write the decree of all that will be, the origin point of a universe that is authored rather than accidental. In the seen, it is the tool Allah swore by and the gift He named when He introduced His generosity to mankind, the means by which a person can hold knowledge that would otherwise die with the one who had it.
There is a quiet challenge folded into all of this for anyone who reads it. Your Lord began creation with a written record and began His teaching of you with the pen. Knowledge that is written outlives the mind that held it, and the Pen is the reason a word spoken once can still reach you across centuries. To honour the Pen is, in part, to take seriously what you do with your own, to write and learn and pass on what is true, knowing that the God who taught man by the pen counts it among the things He is most generous for. The first thing He made was a record. It is worth living like someone who knows their whole life is being written into one.
