What is the Throne (al-Arsh)?

Introduction

Before the first star ignited, before there was an up or a down, one created thing already existed, and it was resting on water. A man once asked the Prophet ﷺ about the beginning of everything, and the answer pulled the curtain all the way back: "There was Allah and nothing else before Him, and His Throne was over the water, and He then created the Heavens and the Earth and wrote everything in the Book." That is the Arsh. The Throne of Allah, the greatest and highest of all created things, older than the sky you are sitting under, the roof of every world there is. Here is what the sources actually tell us about it, and the one thing about it they refuse to tell.

Older than the universe

The Qur'an confirms the sequence in one breath: "And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and His Throne had been upon water, that He might test you as to which of you is best in deed" (11:7).

Read that verse twice, because it does something strange. It starts at the Throne above the waters, the most cosmic sentence imaginable, and lands without warning on you. Why were the heavens made? To test which of you is best in deed. The Throne is the beginning of the story, and your daily choices are apparently the plot. That is how much weight the smallest unseen kindness is carrying.

Established above it

The Qur'an says it again and again, in almost the same words: "your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne" (7:54). And with a gentleness that should not be skipped: "The Most Merciful, above the Throne established" (20:5).

Here the scholars of the first generations drew a famous line, and it is the most honest sentence in all of theology. The establishing is known, for the verse says it. The how is unknown, for no verse describes it. And nothing whatsoever resembles Him, so every picture your mind offers you is wrong by definition. We say exactly what Allah said about Himself and then we stop talking. Notice which of His names sits on the Throne verse: not the Compeller, not the Avenger. The Most Merciful. Whoever rules from that Throne wants you rescued, not ruined.

The ones who carry it

The Throne has bearers, and the Qur'an lets us hear them. "Those who carry the Throne and those around it exalt Allah with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who have believed: Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire" (40:7).

Stop on that mid-verse turn. The greatest angels in existence, holding the heaviest object ever created, and what do they spend their strength on? Praying for the believers, for their forgiveness and their protection from the Fire. If you believe, you are inside that du'a at this moment. You have never once prayed alone; the summit of creation is interceding for the believers around the clock. And listen to their argument before their Lord: You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge. They plead your case using His mercy as the opening line, because they have seen more of it than any creature alive. On the Last Day the bearers will number eight: "there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight" (69:17).

Where it stands

How high is it? The Prophet ﷺ gave us the address in terms of Paradise: Firdaws is the best and highest part of Paradise, and the narration adds that above Firdaws is the Throne of the Most Merciful, and from it the rivers of Paradise flow.

So when he ﷺ told his companions to ask Allah for Firdaws, he was telling them to aim for the apartment directly beneath the Throne. The highest ambition a human being can carry is to sleep, forever, one floor below it.

The Owner, not the Throne

And here the article must end the way every sound discussion of the Arsh ends, by looking past it. The Qur'an never glorifies the Throne itself. It glorifies its Owner: "Honorable Owner of the Throne, Effecter of what He intends" (85:15-16).

The Throne does not run your life. Its Owner does. The Throne cannot hear you at 3am. Its Owner does not sleep. Whatever you are carrying today, take it to the One the eight will carry their burden to, because the verse about His Throne on the water ends, of all places, at your deeds. The whole architecture of existence, from the water to the Throne, was scaffolding for one question: which of you is best in deed. Answer it today, in something small, and the ones holding the Throne will mention you tonight.
