Not the sun, not the galaxies. Above the universe sits the Kursi, and above everything, the Throne. A guided climb up the ladder of scale.
The furthest object your eyes can see tonight is a smudge of light called Andromeda, a galaxy of a trillion suns, and in the inventory of Allah's creation it is a detail too small to mention. So what is the biggest thing He ever made? The answer climbs past everything the telescopes have found. Above the seven heavens stands the Kursi, which the Qur'an says "extends over the heavens and the earth" (2:255). And above even that stands the Arsh, the Throne, the ceiling of all created things. That is the answer in two names: the Kursi dwarfs the universe, and the Throne dwarfs the Kursi. Now take the climb slowly, because each rung is designed to do something to your heart.
We measure our lives in metres and our pride in floors of buildings. The Qur'an starts by breaking that ruler: "The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know" (40:57).
Sit with the understatement. Every human being who ever lived, every empire, every city ever built, all of it together is the smaller work. The sky you ignore on your walk to the car is the larger one. And that is only the first rung.
One night the Prophet ﷺ asked Ubayy ibn Ka'b which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest. Ubayy answered: Ayat al-Kursi. And the Prophet ﷺ struck him on the chest and said, "May knowledge be pleasant for you, Abu'l-Mundhir."
The greatest verse in the Qur'an is the one describing the scale we are climbing toward. "His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not" (2:255). Every galaxy the James Webb telescope has photographed, every one it will ever photograph, sits inside the span of the Kursi the way a coin sits on a table. And the verse adds the line that should end all anxiety forever: preserving all of it does not tire Him.
And the Kursi is not the top. The Prophet ﷺ taught that Firdaws is the best and highest part of Paradise, and the narration adds that above Firdaws is the Throne of the Most Merciful, and from it the rivers of Paradise pour out.
The Throne is where the ladder of created things runs out. The Qur'an gives it bearers: "there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight" (69:17). Eight beings carrying the roof of creation. What kind of beings can shoulder that? The Qur'an does not say, and your imagination was never going to be big enough anyway.
When Allah wants to name His own majesty, this is the title He chooses: "Honorable Owner of the Throne, Effecter of what He intends" (85:15-16).
Now for the verse that turns the whole climb on its head. However enormous the creation is, watch what happens to it at the end: "The earth entirely will be within His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand" (39:67).
The planet you fought over, folded away. The heavens you could not even finish counting, gathered like a scroll. The Qur'an introduces that scene with a diagnosis: "They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal." We keep mistaking the creation for the summit. The summit is not the Throne. The summit is the One above it, and nothing else was ever in the competition.
So the biggest creation of Allah, as far as the sources take us, is the Arsh, with the Kursi beneath it and the universe somewhere in the footnotes. But notice what this knowledge is actually for. The Qur'an never describes the Kursi to make you feel small and leave you there. The same verse that spans the heavens ends with mercy: preserving you does not tire Him.
This is also why the believers before us loved to memorise the very verse this article climbed through. They recited Ayat al-Kursi at dawn, at dusk, before sleep, not as a scholars' exercise but as a homecoming, the daily reminder that the largest thing they would ever contemplate belonged to the One who was closest to them. The verse about the widest creation became the most intimate sentence in their day.
You are a speck on a speck orbiting a spark, and the Owner of the Throne knows when you are tired, hears you when you whisper, and counted the hairs on your head before your mother knew your name. Smallness next to Him was never humiliation. It is the safest thing about you. The next time the night sky makes you feel insignificant, correct the feeling: you are not insignificant, you are held, and the hand holding you also holds the Throne.
